E Urcelay / R Arroyo (HCSC)

The main interest of the research group is the identification of both genetic and environmental MS risk factors. It is a multidisciplinary group, which benefits of the collaboration among experts in Immunology, Neurology and Virology. The Immunogenetic lab is focused in the identification of genetic markers associated with MS and other autoimmune diseases. The MS center of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos directed by Dr R Arroyo is a leading center for clinical research in MS. B) Roberto Alvarez Lafuente is a member of the Scientific Committee of the HHV-6 Foundation, and the MS Lab of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos and participates in international multicenter studies to validate techniques of detection of HHV-6 in biological samples (J Clin Microbiol. 2008 Aug;46(8):2700-6). The lab and GeNeuro Inc have signed a collaboration agreement to perform the study entitled: "Association of endogenous retroviral markers with the diagnosis and prognosis of multiple sclerosis".

The main contributions to REEM are:

  1. Identification, validation and further functional characterization of genetic polymorphisms associated with MS predisposition, in collaboration with K Vandenbroeck, M Comabella, A Saiz, O Fernandez, L Villar and other REEM groups;
  2. Study of pharmacogenetics in MS, in collaboration with the same groups;
  3. Role of viral infections (Herpesvirus-6, Epstein-Barr, retrovirus) in the pathogenesis of MS, in collaboration with L Villar, A Alcami and A Navarro; and IV) study of biomarkers of response to interferon beta treatment, collaborating with O Fernandez, L Villar and M Comabella.
